LNER’s 100th Anniversary Celebration: The 1923 Restaurant

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the LNER brand by offering people an exciting opportunity to ‘travel back in time’, and enjoy a specially created menu, designed to showcase some of the most delicious dishes served to train passengers over the past century, and beyond.

The ‘LNER 1923 Restaurant’, will take place on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th November 2023 at The Cookery School at The Grand Hotel in York – the former headquarters of LNER, providing the perfect historic backdrop for the unique, pop-up restaurant.

During each evening, diners will be transported back to the year the LNER brand first began, savouring delectable dishes from the past and present. Guests will also experience a taste of what may be to come in the shape of a futuristic dessert created to reflect the potential onboard cuisine 100 years from now.

The supper-club style experience will be fully immersive, designed to stimulate the senses and take diners back to a decade filled with post-war optimism, rising prosperity, and glitzy glamour. With stunning 1920s décor, music from the era, and an electric atmosphere, every element will give guests a gourmet glimpse of the infamous roaring twenties.

Once settled into their sumptuous surroundings, diners will enjoy the star of the show – a carefully curated menu which takes inspiration from the past, present, and potential future of the food served to passengers travelling on LNER’s Azuma trains, with courses reflecting the years 1923, 2023, and 2123.

Whilst the event is free for guests to dine, LNER is requesting that people ‘pay’ for their meal with donations to York Foodbank. Guests should bring a small selection of non-perishable, unopened goods that will be collected by the charity.

Menu du jour

Starter – 1923

  • Crème de Pois Vert et Sole Devon
  • A chilled pea soup with watercress reduction & slow cooked sole
  • A pairing of two dishes from actual 1920s LNER menu
  • Vegan/ GF option – Crème de Pois Vert et Poisson Faux
  • A chilled pea soup with watercress reduction and faux fish (watermelon steak)

All dishes will also have a dedicated drink pairing, expertly selected to complement and enhance the delightful flavours at play. The starter will be paired with a classic 1920s cocktail, the Bees Knees – dry gin infused with honey and lemon juice, while the main course will be paired with a crisp white wine from present day and currently served onboard LNER trains. Finally, an Instant Infused Gin Fizz will accompany the dessert, with homemade gin and British fruit and herbs.

The edible elements of the experience aren’t limited to the 1923 Restaurant itself – with LNER exploring ways to introduce dishes inspired by the restaurant.

The 1923 Restaurant is launching following research from LNER, which revealed that over a third of Brits (36 per cent) find long train journeys more appealing as it gives them a chance to relax and enjoy some good food. A further 32 per cent say onboard dining takes the stress out of their journey and makes it feel more leisurely.

Claire Ansley, Customer Experience and People Director at LNER, said: “For the past 100 years, LNER’s chefs have created culinary delights for our customers, always striving for excellence. Whilst our menu has evolved over the years, our commitment hasn’t wavered, and ‘The 1923 Restaurant’ gives us an opportunity to celebrate this and spotlight the culinary talent we continue to nurture. The menu will take guests on a mouth-watering journey through the decades whilst representing the evolution of the LNER brand.”

LNER prides itself on providing customers with the highest quality food and drink onboard its services, serving a wide range of delicious fresh, locally sourced produce, from suppliers and small businesses along its route. The LNER 1923 Restaurant’s menu will reflect this, bringing people together to experience the best of LNER’s local cuisine first-hand.

Sexy Fish Drops Anchor in Manchester

People have evolved in their culinary tastes and experiences. Dining out is no longer just about the food on your plate, but about the atmosphere, the theatrics, and the overall experience. Restaurants and bars have had to innovate, creating immersive experiences that tantalise not just the tastebuds, but all the senses.

A few shining stars in this theatrical space include Albert’s Schloss with its Alpine allure, Ballie Ballerson’s playful million-ball cocktail space, and The Alchemist, the magician’s lair where food and drinks transform before your eyes. However, the new rising star on this illustrious horizon is the entrancing Sexy Fish in Manchester.

Sexy Fish Manchester

Situated in the bustling Spinningfields, Sexy Fish Manchester is the new definition of luxury and grandeur. Their Japanese-inspired menu, combined with surreal decor, make them a heavyweight contender in the experiential dining arena. The Manchester branch has not held back in showcasing its luxurious design elements. Giant sea sculptures by Damien Hirst, cascading waterfalls, the iconic fish lamps by Frank Gehry, and a Verde Esmerelda stone floor all make a grand statement. But it’s not all about looks; the three-floor establishment offers a private dining space that features a vast aquarium boasting a range of tropical fish and its own coral reef.

Under the watchful eye of Chef Director Bjoern Weissgerber, Sexy Fish offers a rich menu. From smoked tuna belly, black cod, to an array of sashimi and nigiri, the dishes are a delight for the senses. The desserts, especially the ‘Sexy Ever After’, are creations that deserve their own spotlight. And, if you fancy a drink, their extensive champagne and sake wine list or their innovative cocktails, are sure to impress.

Elegance, intrigue, and allure converge at Sexy Fish, a venue where every event is a foray into decadence and enchantment. The end of October promises a spine-tingling delight. On Sunday, 29th October, the venue transforms into an ethereal realm with its “Phantoms of the Deep” Halloween Masquerade. Beginning at 7.30 pm, patrons can witness a mesmerizing blend of reality and fantasy, complete with performances from contortionists that bend the imagination and fire breathers that light up the night. All this while savouring bewitching cocktails and mouth-watering dishes crafted especially for the haunting occasion.

But the enchantment doesn’t end with Halloween. The magic extends into every weekend. Each Friday night, from 10pm onwards, the “Undercurrent” dinner party experience plunges guests into a deep-sea exploration. Dive into this weekly offering and indulge in specially crafted cocktails and alluring late-night treats. The rhythmic pulse of live DJs creates a backdrop, ensuring an atmosphere thick with mystique and wonder.

For those seeking even more nocturnal enchantment, “Saturdays After Dark” promises a night of wild passion. Every Saturday, as the stars bedazzle the sky, guests are invited to immerse themselves in an ocean of sinfully delightful cocktails and exquisite dishes, all set to the electrifying beats of live DJs. It’s more than just a night out; it’s an exploration of desires, deep and unabashed.

Yet, for those who crave an exclusive experience, this grand addition promises to redefine luxury dining in the heart of the city. Inspired by the vast oceans of Asia, this venue is not just a restaurant; it’s a work of art. The semi-private dining area offers a unique setting for intimate gatherings. With seating for 30 or standing space for up to 45, it’s the perfect space for celebrations steeped in luxury. Surrealistic décor, unmatched culinary offerings, and an ambience of pure opulence make this the most talked-about restaurant launch of the year.

The realm of experiential dining is expanding, and with establishments like Sexy Fish Manchester setting the gold standard, it’s a trend that shows no sign of slowing down. While many venues offer a delightful evening out, Sexy Fish promises a journey – one that spans across the oceans of Asia, through luxurious interiors and culminates in a gastronomic extravaganza. Welcome to the new era of dining, where every meal is a story waiting to be told.

Walk for Wellbeing aims to raise funds to support individuals and their families in the hospitality sector who are facing challenging times.

UK charity, Hospitality Action, has raised more than £85,000 for its annual Walk for Wellbeing charity event.

The annual walk, now in its fourth year, is powered by UK hospitality talent partner, Mum, in partnership with Caterer.com and Peoplebank.

Walk for Wellbeing aims to raise funds to support individuals and their families in the hospitality sector who are facing challenging times.

Five 20km walks took place in key cities across the UK on 8 October in London, Bath, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow.

Individuals also participated at a location of their choice between 30 September and 15 October, encompassing World Mental Health Day on 10 October.

In London, walkers undertook eight laps of Battersea Park in an event hosted by mum.

They also partnered with The Bath Hoteliers Association to devise a walk between two of the region’s flagship hotels, The Royal Crescent Hotel, Bath and Double Tree by Hilton.

In the Midlands, the route started and ended at Albert’s Schloss in central Birmingham. Hosted by Tonic Talent, the walk also covered parts of Digbeth, the city’s creative quarter and some of Birmingham’s canal network.

Up in Manchester, the 20km route hosted by the Manchester Hoteliers Association passed two water parks, the River Mersey and sections of the Trans Pennine trail.

In Glasgow, Davidson Asset Management hosted the walk which explored Strathclyde Country Park.

Craig Prentice, founder of UK hospitality, Mum, and Walk for Wellbeing, said: “The atmosphere at the walks is always incredible. They are a real coming together of a community and it’s a truly humbling feeling knowing not just how much money we are raising along the way, but how that money is providing vital help to those in our industry.”

Mark Lewis, CEO of Hospitality Action, said: “Walk for Wellbeing has grown into one of our most important and successful fundraisers but equally crucial is what a positive experience it is for every single participant.”

Visiting Cheshire South and West College

Jodie Eccles

Jodie Eccles, Head of Hospitality

Last week, Colin MacIntyre and I, went on our first visit to Cheshire South and West College, where we were greeted warmly by Assistant Director Victoria Mulqueen. And wow, what a college it is!

Our day began with a guided tour through the hospitality and catering kitchens, observing students across levels 1, 2, and 3 diligently engaging in both practical and theoretical work. The students, that achieved UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year 2023, have the incredible opportunity to hone their craft within the college’s 2 AA Rosette-awarded restaurant and deli bar, The Academy. Boasting a modern commercial kitchen that serves the restaurant, The Academy welcomes the general public for lunch and dinner services, while also playing host to guest chefs and gourmet evenings.

During our visit, we also had the pleasure of chatting with Chef Lecturer Matt Smith, the National Chef of Wales for 2023. With an impressive career featuring stints in some of the country’s best hotels and restaurants, as well as experiences in Paris, Matt provides students with top-tier education across all areas, including patisserie.

Peering through the open kitchen, it was uplifting to see level 1 students working as part of a brigade alongside level 3’s, collaboratively crafting culinary creations.

We were escorted into the restaurant by the host. Remarkably, all Front of House team members are students, learning Food & Beverage service and cheffing, enabling them to acquire skills for both front and back of house.

Our meal began with freshly baked bread rolls, followed by our starters: Squash Ravioli with sage butter for Colin, and for me, a Crab Tian accompanied by avocado and a micro herb salad – each dish beautifully presented and bursting with freshness. For the main course, we both selected the Risotto of Squid, pan-seared salmon, and caviar. Our waitress, Sarah, expertly explained each dish and shared insights into her summer job with Vanilla Events, where she further explored the conference and banquet world. For dessert, Chef Lecturer Matt recommended the Gâteaux Pithivier for me, while Colin (a cheesecake aficionado) savoured the Mango and Passionfruit Cheesecake.

What a delightful mid-week treat, the students not only gain hands-on experience working in the restaurant but also enhance their skills and employability by hosting larger events at The Academy.

After the lunch service concluded and the team completed their clean down, Colin and I engaged in a Q&A session with around 40 students. We chatted about our experiences within the hospitality industry and the bountiful opportunities awaiting them in the world of work experience and beyond their courses. Truly, the world is their lobster!
